When Is a Weed Not a Weed?

Okay, so, this flower just kind of sprung up in one of our old pots this spring. It's got to be a weed. But it's so pretty! Bright and orange and tall!

I keep feeling like the fact it is a weed means I should be yanking it out. Bad weed, bad! But at the same time, I am tempted to just enjoy it. It seems happy. I seem happy. Maybe weeds don't always have to be weeds? Anybody know what this is, by the way?

I've never had one in my garden before, but it looks like a wallflower to me.

I'm not sure what it is, though it looks vaguely familiar. You could take a picture of it to a local nursery for ID. If you think it's a weed, just make sure it doesn't go to seed, and you should be fine. To me something is only a weed when a) I don't want it, and b) it spreads aggressively.

Oh, it IS a wallflower, Daphne! I just looked those up and that's exactly it! Now I'm excited -- I'm kind of a wallflower myself, so it's nice to also have them in my yard. I still don't know where it came from, or why it seems to be isolated in that single pot. So weird! Maybe it was flower-planting fairies?

Yeah, I'm sure it was fairies! Ha ha. The same ones that planted sweet williams in our garden. Enjoy your wallflower!
